Mission

A Rich History of Faith and Partnership

UCM was originally founded to serve students at Wisconsin State University, and over time grew into a vibrant spiritual home deeply rooted in collaboration and community.

Nearly 50 years later, three campus ministries—UCM, Lu-Min (Lutheran Campus Ministry), and the Wesley Foundation—came together to build Common Ground, a shared space at 1334 Pine Street that embodies the spirit of unity and care.

Today, UCM is supported by a diverse and faithful group of churches across Wisconsin, united in mission and ministry:

Our Denominational Partners:

Together, these partners help sustain a ministry that is grounded in faith, energized by young people, and committed to inclusion, hospitality, and justice.

What We’re About

We believe:

  • Faith is a journey, not a destination.

  • All are welcome, no matter your background, identity, or questions.

  • Community matters—especially during the transitions and growth of college life.

  • Spiritual exploration is powerful, and it’s even better when done together.

At UCM, we don’t just talk about love—we live it, in small moments like sharing a meal, offering a listening ear, or walking alongside someone through hard times.

Meet Pastor Mary

Rev. Mary Runyon Campus Minister

Originally from Tennessee, Pastor Mary Runyon now calls Wisconsin home and feels especially connected to life near the river and the great outdoors. She brings warmth, wisdom, and a joyful spirit to her work with students at UCM.

Mary’s path to ministry is shaped by a deep love of community and connection. Growing up with a mom who served as a church secretary, Mary learned early on the importance of faith that shows up in everyday kindness.

She holds:

  • A B.S. in Human Ecology from the University of Tennessee

  • A Master of Divinity and a Master of Business Administration from Gardner-Webb University

Mary has served as:

  • Pastor and Associate Pastor

  • Campus and student minister

  • Camp and conference center staff

  • Clergy coach and consultant

She’s also a proud mom to three amazing kids and a crew of beloved dogs. She loves memes, laughter, and anything that gets her outside.

“I feel called to walk with others through the beautiful and messy journey of life. My hope is to create a space where students feel truly seen, valued, and free to ask honest questions as they explore faith and meaning.”
